One of the big debates in journalism right now is over the role of objectivity. Is this an ideal worth upholding — or should we be moving on to other models, like the “moral clarity” ideal recently proposed in the New York Times?
This debate resurfaced last week at a panel discussion hosted by the Columbia Journalism School, “The Objectivity Wars.” My guest on the program today was on that panel.
David Greenberg is a professor of history and of journalism and media studies at Rutgers University. He’s also a columnist at Politico. He recently published a longform piece titled “The War on Objectivity in American Journalism” in the Liberties journal.

Interesting to listen to Mr. Greenberg wrestle with the concept of looking at things objectively when he is so clearly seeing things from his very left leaning viewpoint. Similarly, I must also recognize that I am listening from a right wing perspective, and that colours how I react to his point of view. Tara, I must commend you on how hard you are trying to overcome your own biases and be objective yourself. Keep looking for truth, and keep referencing your classical liberal underpinnings.
One further comment is those on the left's continual insistence on Trump being a negative force. This constant derogatory mention of Trump weakens their argument. I laughed when he said that if the left just reported the truth of Trump's actions then that would prove their point. They are unable to see the actuality of Trump because of being blinded by their Trump derangement syndrome. I've come to understand this because of my own TDS - Trudeau Derangement Syndrome. Just looking at the man is too much for me, let alone hearing him speak. How could I possibly judge any of his actions or policies objectively?
