the second is a history of the term "populism" and would be of particular interest to CCF Tommy Douglas or NDP supporters who feel the party has lost it's way
This was a great conversation. We seem to be in about the same situation here in Canada. I think it’s inaccurate though to say the working class has moved to the right. Rather, the center has lept way to the left, and left the WC behind. We’ll see how that plays out for Justin and Joe.
I understand that move of the centre you speak about. I think of it every time I hear someone on the “progressive” Left say the words “Far Right.” I do not think the Right is as “Far” as they want to believe, and their use of the term only moves the centre towards them so they don’t feel so radical. It is unfortunate that the Legacy Media is a public megaphone for this kind of manipulation.
Good, but Teixeira and Judis seem to be surprised by "recent"developments. These ways of thinking and talking were already common among activists in the '70s. Automatic dismissal of anything associated with the "wrong" team is a permanent characteristic of ideologues in all eras. It used to be the "wrong" prince or the opponents of the Pope. Whatever Unpersons say is heresy. Whatever Correct Persons say is a command. Even when both are saying the same words verbatim, the words are automatically heresy in the mouth of Unpersons and commands in the mouth of the Correct Leader.
"We need a normie party. Probably the democrats" I feel like your bias is showing with that one. The Republicans are far more likely to take that slot at this point.
A little late in the game to be discussing this issue when Canada's Liberals and US Democrats sold out to neoliberalism a long time ago as recorded in books by Tony Judt and Chris Hedges and others. Judt's famous essay "Bush's useful idiots" is required reading for all.
Great talk. I will be checking out this book.
Another writer who I would love to see on the podcast who writes about this type of stuff is the author Thomas Frank.
If anyone is interested here is a link to a talk he gave recently about rural populism https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eooSyWGAjvA
And here is a link to two of his best books. The first is a critique of the modern Democrat party and where he thinks they've gone wrong https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/listen-liberal-or-what-ever-happened-to-the-party-of-the-people/9781627795395.html

Thanks for this, will reach out to Frank!

Fabulous interview. Incisive brilliant and delivered with a comic thrust
