Thanks Tara :)

Interesting read as always.

I agree with Lydia Perovic one hundred percent. Even though my politics mostly skewer towards anarchism/environmentalism/socialism I greatly dislike the virtue signaling, wokeism and divisive politics of the Canadian center left. Most likely I agree with Lydia cause for almost sixteen years I lived overseas in Asia. And prior to my departure I worked hard to form coalitions with conservatives on issues like electoral reform.

One reason I totally like the Canadian men’s soccer manager John Herdman is he works hard to create joy and unity through effort and teamwork. Good role model even though he is an Englishman..ha..ha.

Thx Tara! I came to Canada with my parents in 1969 from what is today known as Croatia. I was 2 years old. I loved growing up in Canada and being Canadian. Lydia Perovic’s words are hauntingly accurate. I recently took early retirement as I no longer felt I could contribute. I don’t recognize Canada anymore. I have thought about leaving after all these years. Your journalism gives voice to some very important issues. Great work!

Thanks for the good read, Tara. I’m glad you are feeling a resurgence of spirit and joie de vivre this spring in Toronto. We all need some lightness of being coming through this horrendous political time. You made some very succinct and important points about the travel mandates, for which there is absolutely no medical reason. It is all a political and economic game, and anyone who is under the illusion that it is anything other than that needs to have their head examined.

Listening to the vaccine efficacy narrative is an absolute joke. On the one hand, the “experts” admit that the vaccines do not stop transmission, that they only prevent serious illness. But then they perpetrate the idea that somehow they need to keep policies like travel mandates in place because somehow unvaccinated people spread it more than vaccinated. That is a fallacy they are very reluctant to let go of for some reason.

"" because somehow unvaccinated people spread it more than vaccinated."" the will not let that go because that would be admitting they are FOS

Expand full comment

That’s exactly right. Perpetuating myths about the dreaded unvaccinated keeps the powers that be shielded from the public backlash because they have a convenient scapegoat. They know it’s bullshit but since it appears to serve political and economic purposes (the backlash is happening and will continue to grow), they are more than happy to trample on the rights of millions of Canadians (approx. 15% of 38 million). It is simply unconscionable.

Seeing as omicron started circulating around the time that the federal government started infringing the domestic travel rights of Canadian citizens, it’a rather delusional of Chagla to announce that the “logic” of the charter-defying mandate “no longer holds”.

Now it’s been uselessly in force for six months, in the middle of which it triggered a popular uprising that the whole world was watching, terminated by an even more constitutionally indifferent use of government powers. Was it “illogical”? Sure, illogical like the taliban’s renewed burqa mandate. But I guess we’ll have to let people lie to themselves for a while if it means they finally dismount from the crazy horse they are spurring off a cliff.

Expand full comment

There never was a valid reason for the domestic travel ban for the unvaccinated. Just a punishment for people who don’t buy the narrative. In the midst of the first two variants, which affected people’s lungs, Canada was allowing flights from India and other places, and the virus was being rapidly transmitted as a result. The hypocrisy of it all is astonishing. The unvaccinated never had anything to do with spreading it more than anyone else, but so many people stick adamantly to this myth.

They should pay more attention to the fact that Pfizer has made 38 billion in the last three months. Now that is cause for worry, not a Canadian citizen, who more and more likely has natural immunity, boarding a plane in their own country!

The 86% of our population used to be represented by their politicians.

First, I must apologize for my cynicism. Great start, huh?

I used to think that politicians represented "me," that is, they represented the broad public of which I am [at least, I think so!] fairly representative. I have learned that there are very few politicians that truly represent "me" or, for that matter, almost anyone else.

Instead, politicians represent the cause du jour. Politicians do not stop and ask, "Okay, if you want us to do that [whatever "that" it might be], how will we pay for it? What are the implications if we make that choice, etc.

A perfect example [great courage on my part here!] is (sorry) the environmental movement. Politicians have stated that they believe, believe I tell you!, that the greening of society is absolutely imperative and they tell us that we need to be net zero, etc., etc. Then they do nothing to recognize that would mean a colossal change in society. But, hey, the politicians told us that they "believe" so they represent us, right?

No, politicians do not represent us any longer. If, for that matter, they ever did. On the other hand, I really didn't / don't believe all that net zero stuff so I am not surprised by their lies in that area or in any other area.

"Could we please just have a few days off before we start in on the next ten-alarm fire?"

Then what would the professional left activist do during the pause? And the media... it relies on a steady stream of alarmist topics for the AI engines to create compelling enough copy!

I say we screwed up when we invented this thing called "political science" and instead of a design of democratic governance where people have a normal life and a productive career, and take time out of that normal life to agitate for cause or run for office and serve, and then go back to their normal life to make room for the next citizen to serve... we made activist and politics a career that people pursue.

I some remedies for the US:

1. Term limits.

2. No stock trading for national politicians and their families while the politician is in office. No stock trading or significant financial relationship with outside entities for any senior government official where those transactions have a whiff of real or potential conflicts of interest.

3. New Conflict of Interest unit that reports to the CBO and runs like a Grand Jury to vet all claims of political and senior government official conflicts of interest. Unit has the ability to refer to Justice for criminal acts, but main weapon is ability to fine offenders.

4. Stronger oversight of non-profits to stay within their mission or lose their non-profit status. For all non-profits with a political-related mission, quarterly reporting on money in and money out including names of benefactors and beneficiaries. No money from or two foreign sources related to politics.

5. Student loans and student assistant caps for declared majors based on career earning potential. In other words, more money for STEM degrees, and less for gender studies.

Thanks, Tara. I am so happy for the Netflix statement that I am looking for new ways to support them. Finally, some adults at the helm of a major corporation.

And, I am right there with you wanting a wee break from the urgent (and sometimes valid) cause du jour. Spring is such a hopeful time with its colorful flowers and moderate temperatures. All together now...taking a deep breath and closing our eyes....ahhhhhh. :-)

I've paid twice: Why would you think I don't appreciate what she does? She's very good, among the best, as far I'm concerned; plenty to learn here if one were so inclined. Her audience and how they respond are what appeal to me.
